I would approach it like this:

Imagine you have written a novel. Potentially it is the greatest novel ever written and you are immensely proud of your work. You have put a lot of effort and hard work into writing this masterpiece and it has taken years to complete.

Now write an introduction to the novel. It should not summarize the book or talk about its plot or characters. Rather, it should address how you feel about the work and how you felt while writing it. Why did you want to write it? What inspired you? How do you feel after finishing it? What important issues does it raise, if any? Use your imagination, be creative.

If you can manage to find 'Preface to the First Edition' by William Saroyan I would recommend reading it as a guide.

I suggest you consult your syllabus. I am sure your professor wasn't this vague in his assignment. If he was you may want to e-mail him for clarification, please do not use yahoo answers as a scholarly source. The following link is to the University of Chicago's writing site.
